A few weeks ago, I posted an article entitled "Detoxifying Naturally & Safely - 3 and 7 Day Protocols" which generated quite a bit of interest! I decided to try Nutritionist's Nedra Sahr's "Fresh Start" program myself and thought I would share my personal experience.
Today marks the 44th anniversary of Earth Day. The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. More than one billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
I am proud to represent a company -- Shaklee Corporation -- that has been a leader in environmental stewardship since 1956. Dr. Forrest Shaklee was a man ahead of his time with a keen love and respect for the powers of nature. He believed in and taught the absolute necessity for man to protect our environment. Click here to hear Dr. Shaklee describe his mission in his own words. From creating one of the first biodegradable cleaners (Basic H) in 1960, which was later chosen as one of the first official Earth Day products, to becoming the first company in the world to earn complete Climate Neutral certification -- offsetting 100% of our carbon emissions -- the company has stayed true to Dr. Shaklee's commitment and for 58 years, has created truly sustainable products for people and the planet -- simply because it is the right thing to do.

If you are taking statin drugs to lower cholesterol, hopefully you have been told to take Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to offset a serious side effect of statins which is the lowering and even depletion of your body's CoQ10. CoQ10 is vital for producing energy in the cells and the heart requires the most energy and CoQ10 of all to function properly. So although statin drugs are prescribed to prevent heart disease, by lowering CoQ10, they are depleting a vital nutrient that supports heart health! (Another confirmation of my mother's wise words, "When you take medicine for one thing it causes something else!")
Each year in April, we celebrate Earth Day which gets many of us thinking about ways to protect our planet. (I'll be writing more about that in an upcoming post.) Becoming a conscientious consumer and changing your cleaning, laundry and personal care products to safe and effective alternatives is a simple thing you can do to improve your and your family's health and the health of our planet. Below is a recent Shaklee Health Wise blog post by Dr. Jamie McManus that outlines a few common household products and the negative effect they have on your health. Scroll all the way down for a "Household Cleaners Dossier" for further information on the effect that conventional products have on you and your family.
Spring -- the season of new beginnings -- is a good time for opening the windows to let the fresh air in and the household toxins out and a good time for an internal "spring cleaning" for your body too! . . . I'm often asked about detox/cleansing programs. Fasting for religious and health reasons is nothing new; and when done sensibly, it promotes weight loss and improves overall health. However, with so many internet and You Tube "experts" promoting all sorts of theories, programs and cleanses that can be unhealthy and costly; you do need to be careful. When you eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, supplement wisely, drink plenty of pure water, exercise and get adequate sleep -- which gives your digestive system some down time between your last meal of the day and your first of the following day -- your body goes through a natural cleansing process everyday. However, there are times when a sensible detoxification/cleansing program can be quite helpful; such as when your diet and lifestyle have not been as healthy as they should be or to jumpstart or restart a healthy weight loss program.
You may be aware of the media hype that “Saturated fats aren’t bad for you after all” based on a meta-analysis recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Before jumping to conclusions, it's important to dig deeper and get the full picture. When I come across information like this, I'm always reminded of my mom's wisdom and emphasis on the importance of "moderation" as well as a holistic physician who told me many years ago that "small amounts of butter are far better than margarine." In today’s “Health Tips From the Professor”, Dr. Chaney explains the study and the truth about fats – "the good, the bad and the ugly." (Be sure to read all the way through to take quiz and learn more about the benefits of a Mediterranean diet.)
