In "I cancelled my health insurance and couldn't be happier" I explain why I did what might seem a little crazy; but, once you learn how well healthcare sharing works, you just might agree that you should have made the switch a long time ago.
The healthcare sharing ministry (HCSM) that I joined is Samaritan Ministries. Rather than paying a monthly premium to an insurance company, I send my monthly "share" to a fellow member who has an actual health care need. Samaritan Ministries, sends a beautiful newsletter each month and lets me know where to send my share. Being a Christian based ministry, members are asked to pray for each other and send a note of encouragement with our monthly share. If I have a need, I contact the kind and helpful member services team at Samaritan and they ask members to send their share to me. It's simple. It's beautiful. It works.
With traditional health insurance my ever increasing premium was higher than my HCSM share; and I had a $10,000 deductible. With Samaritan, I am responsible for the first $300 of my health care need. So in addition to the warm feeling I get when I mail my share knowing that I'm helping someone; it's reassuring to know that if I have a need I can afford the portion for which I am responsible; and now that I'm approaching age 65, I can opt for Medicare supplement insurance or stay with Samaritan for my healthcare needs not covered by Medicare Part A.
"It's not easy putting into words the feeling I got being on the receiving end."
"To be on the receiving end of Samaritan Ministries is a very humbling experience. From the kindness of the staff who answered my questions and prayed for and with me each time I called, to receiving checks and prayer-filled notes from other members is something very special. Every bit of my publishable need was covered. Even more humbling is that the people who prayed for me and shared my need don't know me personally. What a beautiful way to care for each other!"
If you are dissatisfied with your current health insurance or concerned about high premiums and high deductibles, check out Samaritan or one of the other options listed at the end of this post. Feel free to contact me; and if you decide to go with Samaritan, please let them know that I referred you!
