My siblings and I were very blessed to have Mom until she was 88 and Dad until he was 91. Although Mom's health challenges in the last several years of her life made it difficult for her to speak, there was never any doubt that she knew each of her five children and 10 grandchildren by name; and Dad, well he was still giving us orders until his very last day on earth!
Sadly, many families are not as fortunate. We probably all know of cases where aging parents can't seem to remember their children's names and, at times, don't even recognize them. Then there are cases where Alzheimer's strikes people at a younger age. How difficult and painful that is for the family.
